The WiT Award is a playwriting prize for new playwrights who work in the theatre industry, and who are resident in the United Kingdom.
We aim to find and nurture a playwright who has worked in theatre for two years or more, and who has been enthused by this opportunity to consider and study the art and craft of playwriting.
Candidates may have worked front-of-house, on stage, backstage or in administrative roles. We are looking for a play of substance which contributes in some way to our understanding of an aspect of the human condition or experience, from a writer with the capacity to enhance our political and social awareness.
Candidates will not yet have had a play professionally produced.
Looking for inspiration and encouragement? We spoke to successful playwrights about their writing habits. Read the “How I Write” interviews here.
The winner will receive a new play commission of £8,000, a development relationship with Out of Joint, and a workshop with actors and a director to develop the play, with a presentation before an audience.
Please see the guidelines for full details, including a breakdown of the commission payment. (Please note: the 2017 entry deadline has now passed.)
The WiT Award is administered by Out of Joint (the theatre company known for presenting new writing) on behalf of a charitable trust, the Experienced Theatre Practitioners Early Playwriting Trust.
How To Enter
The deadline for entries for the 2017 award has now passed.
Send us one full length play (at least 80 minutes). The deadline for entries is midnight on 2 March 2017.
Before sending your play, read the submission guidelines carefully as we will not accept entries that do not adhere to them.
Email your script to email@example.com – we don’t accept scripts by post. Pages must be numbered, and the script should include a cover sheet with the writer’s contact details. We’ll confirm receipt of your play by email.
Plays will be read by a panel, and the winner will be announced in May.
